The Sustainable Living Coalition is blessed with a board of directors who are filled with passion for our mission and energy to actualize our vision. Each person brings their unique gifts and talents, so together, as a harmonious but truth-telling group, we can have fun together and make a big difference for our community and our world. We welcome anyone visiting this web site to consider joining us in our quest for bringing the knowledge and practical application of sustainability principles to Fairfield, Jefferson County, and beyond.
Executive Director, Bob Ferguson, caught up with Mayor Ed Malloy at his office to discuss the capital campaign underway to complete construction of the SEED Center Eco Barn. Mayor Malloy emphasized that our community has always risen to the occasion to support the development of unique amenities for our community like the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, The Fairfield Loop Trail, The Maasdam Barns and Roosevelt Recreation Center, to name just a few. The Eco Barn at the SLC SEED Center is taking its place as a unique and iconic Fairfield community gather place and eco-tourism attraction. We are raising $20,000 to complete the final phase of construction on the south porch area including solariums, a second bathroom, mechanical room for the advanced lithium iron battery to be integrated into our solar energy system, final HVAC, plumbing and kitchen finish. Amenities will also include a fully integrated Zoom Room video conferencing facility so the Eco Barn can go the world and the world can come to the Eco Barn.
What a spectacular Celebration of the Farmer’s of Jefferson and surrounding Counties who, at the Farmer’s Market and other outlets, provide us healthy, safe, nutrient-dense food. Nearly 100 guests came out to enjoy this evening of celebration and thanks for our local farmers. Organic chicken donated by Everybody’s Whole Foods expertly grilled by grill-master Kevin Riley and an astounding array of dishes brought by guests helped make for a magical evening. Steve McLain and Michaela McLain along with Bad, Bad Leroy Brown lead guitarist,Jimmy Ryan, charmed the crowd. Hats off to SLC board members Barb Stone and Faith Reeves for their deep roots in the farming community and organizing power for this memorable event.
Join us for another Pot Luck and Community Discussion on Thursday, October 18 at 6:30 PM at the Eco Barn.
This is what our speaker, Scott Vlaun, has to say about permaculture and food security.
“Our current industrialized food system is falling short in many ways. It is failing to feed a hungry world, is degrading to land and farmers and is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Permaculture Design holds the promise of regenerating our farmland, sequestering carbon, providing a more nutrient dense diet, empowering small farmers, and rebuilding communities.”
Join Scott Vlaun, Executive Director of the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy in Norway, Maine and Permaculture teacher at MUM for a slide presentation and discussion exploring the perils of our current system and taking a look at how some large scale permaculture sites in the region are becoming models for sustainability and regional food security.
We are very please to welcome a newly formed board of advisors for the SLC, which includes international experts in business, economic development, agricultural economics, regenerative agriculture and more.
It has been an eventful year since we inaugurated our Pot Luck and Community Discussion series in October 2017. With the sufficient completion of our SEED Center Eco-Barn, we were able to welcome the public to series of events that have really put the SLC and the Eco Barn Event Center on the map in Fairfield and beyond. Here is what Mayor Ed Malloy has to say about the value of the SLC for our community. Download and read the whole report here.
